KOVAX Abrasive Technology – How to choose the right abrasive for automotive painting?
One of the most important stages of automotive painting is proper surface preparation. Even the highest-quality primer, paint or clear coat cannot deliver the desired result if the surface underneath has not been properly prepared. The goal of professional sanding is not simply to remove material, but to create an even surface with the appropriate level of smoothness and an ideal finish for the next stage of the process.
KOVAX abrasive products can be used in many stages of automotive painting and surface preparation. When choosing the right abrasive, however, it is important to consider the surface being worked on, the task at hand and, of course, the required grit size.
Why is sanding so important during automotive painting?
Sanding creates the proper foundation for the subsequent layers. It helps remove old coatings and minor surface imperfections, prepares the filler and primer, and refines the surface before painting and clear coating.
With improper sanding, scratches and unevenness can remain visible through the subsequent layers. That is why not only the quality of the abrasive matters, but also whether a product with the appropriate grit is used for the given stage of the process.
Sanding discs for machine sanding
The sanding disc is one of the most commonly used abrasives in automotive body shops. With an orbital sander, larger surfaces can be worked quickly and evenly, making it an excellent choice for preparing body panels, for example.
When choosing the right disc, it is important to consider not only the grit size but also the design and the sanding machine being used. It is advisable to gradually move from coarser sanding to finer grits so that the sanding marks from the previous stage can be properly removed.
Abrasive sheets and wet-and-dry sandpaper for hand sanding
Not every surface can be effectively sanded with a machine. For edges, minor repairs and hard-to-reach areas, abrasive sheets and wet-and-dry sandpaper can provide a practical solution.
Wet sanding can be particularly useful when creating a fine surface finish. Water can help remove loose sanding residue while allowing a very fine and even surface to be prepared for the next stage of the process.
Sanding sponges for curved and hard-to-reach surfaces
Car bodywork contains numerous curved surfaces, edges and contours where using conventional rigid abrasives can be difficult. Thanks to its flexible design, a sanding sponge follows the shape of the surface more effectively.
This is particularly beneficial when working on bumpers, curves, edges and other complex shapes. With the right sanding sponge, areas that would be difficult to work on precisely with machine sanding can also be prepared evenly.
What grit size should you choose?
One of the most important considerations when choosing an abrasive is the grit size. In general, the lower the P value, the coarser the abrasive, while higher values are suitable for creating increasingly finer surfaces.
Coarser grits are primarily used for more intensive material removal, while medium grits are used to further level the surface. Fine and very fine abrasives can then be used for precise surface preparation before painting, clear coating or polishing.
It is important to avoid unnecessarily large jumps between grit sizes. Gradually moving to finer grits makes it easier to remove the sanding marks from the previous stage and helps achieve a more even finish.
Hand or machine sanding?
Both are generally needed during professional automotive painting. On larger and relatively flat body surfaces, a sanding machine and sanding disc allow for quick and efficient work. On smaller, curved or difficult-to-reach areas, however, hand sanding can provide greater control.
Sanding blocks, sanding sponges, abrasive sheets and abrasives in different designs are therefore not substitutes for one another. In a well-organised sanding system, each has its own specific purpose.
KOVAX abrasives for professional surface preparation
A quality paint finish begins long before the spray gun is used. With the right KOVAX abrasives, suitable sanding solutions can be selected for the different stages of the process, from coarse preparation to creating a fine surface finish.
At the Color Market webshop, you can choose from various sanding discs, abrasive sheets, wet-and-dry sandpaper, sanding sponges, sanding blocks and other abrasive products. With the right abrasive, the work can become faster and more efficient while also providing the foundation for a professional-quality paint finish.
